Mini Mindfulness Break for May 23, 2021

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Nobody to Be, Nothing to Strive For

To study the way of enlightenment is to study the self. To study the self is to forget the self. To forget the self is to be actualized by myriad things.

– Eihei Dogen, “Tea and Rice”

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Generosity Produces Peace

Receiving is a powerful–and intimate–practice, for we are actually inviting another person into ourselves. Rather than focusing on our own practice, or on our own virtue, we can focus on providing an opportunity for someone else to develop generosity. . . . That moment itself is unsullied. For that reason it is said that generosity is the discipline that produces peace.

– Judy Lief, “The Power of Receiving “

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Peace demands the most heroic labor and the most difficult sacrifice. It demands greater heroism than war. It demands greater fidelity to the truth and a much more perfect purity of conscience.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Allegiance to Life

Feeling alarm or devastation can guide us to a deep sanity, reminding us of who we are and what we need. It can remind us that we belong to this larger body and that we care for it. Our power to act, our power to take part in the healing of our world, our power to bring things back into balance, comes from the same source as that devastation. Our pain for the world, and our power to take part in the healing of our world, both come from the same place.

– Joanna Macy, “Allegiance to Life”

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Become familiar with what equanimity feels like internally. Start with something simple, like a slight pain in your knee when you are sitting in meditation, and simply be aware of it as a sensation rather than as something to resist, resent, or wish away. Do the same with any slightly pleasant sensation, such as in parts of your body that feel comfortable when you sit. Learn to simply observe these sensations as phenomena, with equanimity.

– Andrew Olendzki, Dharma Wheel – Tricycle
