Mini Mindfulness Break for May 15, 2021

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Use Compassion to Protect Yourself

Use compassion, not anger, to motivate you to protect yourself, and [have] compassion toward the person who’s giving you the trouble. Compassion rather than hate is what helps.

– Gelek Rinpoche, “What to Do When the Anger Gets Hot”

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Real Intimacy

There is no such thing as two people–whether baby and mother, two lovers, or teacher and student–being perfectly in sync with each other’s needs and wishes. Real intimacy arises from an ongoing process of connection that at some point is disrupted and then, ideally, repaired.

– Pilar Jennings, “Looking into the Eyes of a Master”

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Forgiveness Liberates

I think the reason that remarkable stories of forgiveness take our breath away is that we instantly feel the liberation in the lifting of boundaries, the end of separation, of “inside” and “outside.”

– Roshi Nancy Mujo Baker, “The Seventh Zen Precept “

Dear *[FNAME]*:
“When you wake up, you realize that you wake up out of everything, including all the things that have helped to bring you there.

“The biggest barrier to awakening is the belief that it is something rare. When this barrier is dropped, or at least you start to tell yourself, ‘I really don’t know if my belief that awakening is difficult is true or not,’ then everything becomes instantly available to you. What is so beautiful about awakening is that when you are no longer functioning through your conditioning, then the sense of ‘me’ who was living that life is no longer there.”

– Akayashanti, Interview with Maryanne Comaroto

An opportunity always looks like a lucky break. It happens when you encounter the possibility of making a huge jump toward the life your essential self wants to live.

Dear *[FNAME]*:
I am willing to change.

My spiritual growth often comes to me in strange ways. It can be a chance meeting or an accident, a dis-ease or the loss of a loved one. Something inside urges me to follow, or I am forcefully prevented from living in the same old way. It is a little different for each person. I grow spiritually when I accept responsibility for my life. This gives me the inner power to make the changes in myself that I need to make. Spiritual growth is not about changing others. Spiritual growth happens to the person who is ready to step out of the victim role, into forgiveness, and into a new life. None of this happens overnight. It is an unfolding process. Loving myself opens the door, and being willing to change really helps.

– Louise Hay

Dear *[FNAME]*:
Dualism and Swinging Doors

Our usual understanding of life is dualistic: you and I, this and that, good and bad. But actually these discriminations are themselves the awareness of the universal existence. ‘You’ means to be aware of the universe in the form of you, and ‘I’ means to be aware of it in the form of I. You and I are just swinging doors.

– Shunryu Suzuki Roshi, “Breathing”
