Drunk on Dhamma
Being drunk on the dhamma is no different from being drunk on alcohol. They’re really similar. Don’t go there. You have to look carefully, again and again, for sometimes something is dhamma, but it’s drunk. That’s not right. – Venerable Ajahn Chah, “Drunk on Dhamma” |

Stand with Your Shadow
I believe that traditions can promote peace and they can promote violence. There are shadows in humanity, and therefore there are shadows in our traditions. One has to stand with one’s shadows and one’s traditions, which is difficult to do, and learn to use the values of compassion, restorative justice, and reconciliation as pathways toward healing. – Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb, “The Torah of Nonviolence” |

To have faith is to trust yourself to the water. When you swim you don’t grab hold of the water, because if you do you will sink and drown. Instead you relax, and float.

Some say my teaching is nonsense. Others call it lofty but impractical. But to those who have looked inside themselves, this nonsense makes perfect sense. And to those who put it into practice, this loftiness has roots that go deep. I just have three things to teach: – Lao-Tzu, Daily Peace Quote |

How Prayer Works
To understand how prayer works, consider the sun, which shines everywhere without hesitation or hindrance. Like God or Buddha, it continuously radiates all its power, warmth, and light without differentiation. When the earth turns, it appears to us that the sun no longer shines. But that has nothing to do with the sun; it’s due to our own position on the shadow side of the earth. If we inhabit a deep, dark mine shaft, it’s not the sun’s fault that we feel cold. Or if we live on the earth’s surface but keep our eyes closed, it’s not the sun’s fault that we don’t see light. The sun’s blessings are all-pervasive, whether we are open to them or not. Through prayer, we come out of the mine shaft, open our eyes, become receptive to enlightened presence, the omnipotent love and compassion that exist for all beings. – Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche, “Prayer” |

It’s so easy to get caught up ruminating about the past or planning the future that we forget to relish the present moment. But this moment–yes, this one right here–is the only moment that isn’t either a bygone memory or a figment of your imagination. When you’re so busy looking backwards or looking forwards, you forget that radical aliveness exists only NOW. – Lissa Rankin, MD, Your Inner Pilot Light |

If we are meant to continue living on this particular planet, we must switch to a way of thinking and living that has never before existed. This is necessary because the conditions we now face as a species are utterly unprecedented. What this means is that no culture–I repeat, no culture whatsoever–can give us full instructions on how to embody this new consciousness. Since there is no cultural map, we have no alternative but to rely completely on the internal compasses we all carry in our hearts.
