Kindness is Society

During a lecture while I was interpreting for the Dalai Lama, he said in what seemed to me to be broken English, ‘Kindness is society.’ I wasn’t smart enough to think he was saying kindness is society. I thought he meant kindness is important to society; kindness is vital to society; but he was saying that kindness is so important that we cannot have society without it. Society is impossible without it. Thus, kindness IS society; society IS kindness. Without concern for other people it’s impossible to have society.

Sit, Sit, Sit

The zazen period we are recommending is 20 minutes. You may find that you will want to do more–or less–and that is fine. What is important is consistency. To keep your practice consistent, remember what the famous Nike ad says: “Just do it.” Don’t concern yourself with trying to get to some particular place or state of mind. Each day’s zazen will be a little different, just like the rest of life.

The Five Hindrances

At all times, and in no particular order, we want to become sensitive to the harmful effects of sense desire, ill will, restlessness, sluggishness, and doubt, and to work actively to restrain their arising. With the development of certain skills, we can position ourselves wisely so that the conditions that feed these unhealthy states will diminish.

We give because it feels good and we want to feel good. Of course, there can be “giving from ego,” which is designed to “give in order to get,” but that’s not what we’re talking about. In the same way that we can’t “cleverly use kindness” when identified with ego, we can’t have the heart-felt feeling good that giving from the Heart is. It’s simply not possible.

Walking Meditation

Before and during the time of the Buddha, monks and nuns would walk slowly from their hermitage to the village to beg for food. Their minds would be fully attentive to each step they took. When they reached the village, they would go from door to door with their begging bowls. They would knock on the doors of the villagers and wait patiently for them to respond. When the door was opened, they would bow in deep respect and place their bowl in easy reach of the villages. They would accept with gratitude any food offerings they would receive.

Overshooting the Mark

The problem is that when people practice meditation–especially since we’re all almost all converts–of necessity that involves, at least in the early years, a sort of neurotic investment of energy. It doesn’t accomplish anything. You sort of overshoot the mark…. Sometimes, aiming lower you accomplish more.
