You’re one piece of a jigsaw puzzle: as you begin to move into your true shape, the pieces around you either change to match you, or stop fitting.

For Whom Do You Practice?
If we wish to live well in the world, not just amble along through life without any examination of our being, then we must engage in the effort to find meaning in our lives. In order to do this, we have to find a way to balance our own interiority with an empathic recognition of others. – Eido Frances Carney, “The Way of Ryokan” |

Remember Now
Any sudden loss of bearings, within our multitasking, overcommitted lives, can leave us breathless and insecure for a moment. But it is also an exhilarating relief to tumble through the prefab words and concepts and to enter the always welcome reality of what’s happening. Loss of certainty can be as arresting as the Northern Lights, when the overhanging bough of darkness pulses into life and stops us in our tracks. Surely many of us feel, within such a moment of astonishment, “Yes, I remember now!” – John Elder, “Dust of Snow: Awakening to Conversation” |

Always we seek the presence that includes. How can excitement be joyful, energizing, and serve Life? We can see the tendency to veer off–yes, following ego–from “pure” to “impure.” By that I mean simply from “Life” to “ego.” It’s so tricky because it’s all the same, isn’t it? Excitement is excitement feels like excitement and wants to act–wait a minute–there we have it. It’s when we get to “act” that we really want to be heads up. When we slide into “doing,” we want to be paying close, close attention. That’s the point at which we’re usually bamboozled into doing something we would rather we hadn’t done!

Putting Your Body to Good Use
What should you do to put your body to good use? Most people have no idea. A craftsman who borrows some tools will try to make the best possible use of them while they are available. Your body, too, is actually on loan to you for the time being, for the brief period left before it is taken back from you by death. Had you better not use it to practice the dharma while you can? – Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, “The Day After You Die” |

“Compassion is comprised of that capacity to see clearly into the nature of suffering. It is that ability to really stand strong and to recognize that I’m not separate from this suffering… We actually aspire to transform suffering and if we are so blessed, we engage in activities that transform suffering… We cannot be attached to outcome.”

One thing that helps in dealing with praise and blame is not to take things personally. Having yourself be the focus of everything can be seen as a kind of intoxication, distorting your perception of things as they actually are. Remind yourself that conditions are transient, that peoples’ opinions are subject to change, and that they may not praise or blame you with any real understanding of who you are or what you had in mind.
